Staff and Faculty Services

Required Appointments

When a professor requires an appointment, proof of that appointment comes in the form of a Client Report Email. It is the responsibility of the student to forward, screenshot, or print this email to share with their professor. If the professor requires specific content focus, we ask that the professor provides the student with a referral.

Because our service is a synchronous coaching service, our coaches cannot edit, proofread, or ghostwrite for students—we cannot certify that a paper is grammatically perfect or free of errors. Instead, we work with students to develop their ideas, see the potential for improvement through revision, and learn their patterns of error to create self-editing checklists and use editing tools.

Plagiarism Response

Although the Writing Center cannot certify a paper as free of plagiarism or analyze the Turn-It-In report, our coaches can work with students on learning the basic rules of their field’s documentation style and identifying areas for improvement. If a student’s writing has been flagged for plagiarism by a citation-checking program or website, their professor can partner with the Writing Center by providing the student with feedback on where the plagiarism was flagged and what concepts they should work on with their writing coach.

Staff and Faculty Appointments

The Writing Center is a resource that is available to all members of the APU community, including staff and faculty members. If a professor would like to work with a coach to revise an article before publication or to practice a presentation before a conference, they are welcome to schedule an appointment with us.

Syllabus language

If a professor chooses to include the Writing Center in their syllabus, we ask that they use this language:

Writing Center coaches are available for the purpose of developing your writing skills as you write your papers. Students can attend at any stage of the writing process for feedback and guidance on developing their projects. Writing sessions are synchronous and discussion-based, requiring active participation from the student. Please be aware that the Writing Center does not provide editing, proofreading, or paper grading services. For more resources and helpful information, please visit www.apuwritingcenter.com. Writing workshops and formatting tips videos are available at youtube.com/c/azusapacificwritingcenter.

You may also contact the Writing Center by phone at 626-815-6000, ext. 3142, or email them at writingcenterstaff@apu.edu.

To require Writing Center attendance, please use the following:

Writing Center coaches are available for the purpose of developing your writing skills as you write your papers. All students are required to attend a session at least once during the semester, and the appointment must be made at least one week in advance to ensure availability.* However, you may meet with the writing coaches for additional assistance throughout the semester if you choose. The session will account for ___ points of your grade for this assignment. After the appointment, you will receive a Client Report Form through email detailing the date, time, and summary of your session. Please forward that email to me to prove that you completed the required session.  *Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you make the appointment enough in advance to secure an appointment time. It is not the responsibility of your professor or the Writing Center to ensure available appointment times.

If you prefer for students not to email you the Client Report Form (CRF), you may have the student take a screen shot of the CRF and upload it to Canvas instead. If you choose this option, please replace "Please forward that email to me to prove that you completed the required session" with "Please take a screen shot of the Client Report Form and upload the photo to the designated slot on Canvas to prove that you completed the required session."

Additionally, if you choose to have the appointment be an assignment on its own rather than part of the grade for another assignment, please replace "The session will account for ___ points of your grade for this assignment" with "The session will account for _____ percent of your final grade in this class."

Youtube Workshops

We now offer digital workshops that are posted on our YouTube channel. These workshops, such as on integrating sources and writing thesis statements, can be shown in class or provided as a resource outside of the classroom. Feel free to integrate these materials into your courses however you choose, such as but not limited to assigning the video as homework, writing quizzes on the content, and assigning a point value to in-class participation on the subject.

In-Class Workshops

In addition to the digital workshops, we also offer a variety of in-class workshops. These presentations are limited to those not yet digitized. If you would like a coach to present a writing topic workshop or to speak at an orientation, please fill out our Workshop Request Form. Due to the high demand for In-Person Workshops, we are not able to fill every request.
